Editors’ Notes Nas lied to us. Often cited as one of the best hip-hop albums of the '90s, Illmatic is the undisputed classic upon which Nas' reputation rests. The songs and the emotions of those songs are so pure and never, never diminishing in your passion for how they made you feel [and] how much you love them to this day. Illmatic is the debut studio album by American rapper Nas.It was released on April 19, 1994, by Columbia Records.After signing with the label with the help of MC Serch, Nas recorded the album in 1992 and 1993 at Chung King Studios, D&D Recording, Battery Studios, and Unique Recording Studios in New York City. So without it, there is no "Illmatic." The important thing to note about "Halftime" is that it's reportedly the song that got Nas his deal at Columbia, by being included on the "Zebrahead" soundtrack. Four tracks into his debut album, he told listeners, “The world is yours,” but he was wrong. It helped spearhead the artistic renaissance of New York hip-hop in the post-Chronic era, leading a return to street aesthetics.Yet even if Illmatic marks the beginning of a shift away from Native Tongues-inspired alternative rap, it's strongly rooted in that sensibility.
