Sophia wasn't really a part of this show. Estelle Gettleman (née Scher; July 25, 1923 – July 22, 2008), known professionally as Estelle Getty, was an American actress and comedian, best known for her portrayal of Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls (1985 – 1992), a role she reprised for appearances on Empty Nest (1993 – 1995), The Golden Palace (1992 – 1993), Blossom (1990–1995), and Nurses (1991 – 1994). She was the character that was chosen as the link between THE GOLDEN GIRLS and this show to initiate the spinoff and to help boost ratings at the beginning, they would have Sophia make occasional appearances on EMPTY NEST, even though she wasn't really a character on the show. Sicilian spitfire Sophia Petrillo of The Golden Girls joins the Empty Nest cast at the start of season 6. Blanche Devereaux from The Golden Girls appears on spin-off show Empty Nest in the episode Fatal Attraction.
